Water Chronicles: 30m of Loss and Rebirth

Underneath the Liyutan Lake Reservoir hides a history, blending the Hakka ethnic group, Japanese settlers, the Pazih tribe, the Atayal tribe. There were once tales of struggle, loss, hope, orchards, and homeland. However, the reservoir project brought it all to a halt.

Now, what remains is the Water-level-fluctuation zone with a 30-meter drop. Here, the mist, wind, and the rise and fall of water create a rhythmical narrative space. Three zones echo land development stages by offering diverse uses.

The three designs are described below:

The Native Land Maze is located at the site representing the network-shaped area where the prehistoric civilization and the Hakka people first collaborated with the Pazih tribe in reclaiming the land. To the Hakka ancestors, the network-shaped Bo Gong (God of Land and Wealth) served as a carrier that helped them find stability in their lost state during the reclamation. Therefore, participants will gradually find the direction of the buried village within the maze by referencing Bo Gong's landmarks, just as they experience the transition from being lost to clarity in the land's sentiments during the reclamation.

The Entangled Teahouse is situated next to the contested front line between the Hakka people and the Atayal tribe, on the courtyards of both sides. Like two courtyards unrelated in time and space, they will begin to turn, interfere, disorder, and merge due to the influence of the wind, symbolizing a period of history marked by the conflicts between the Hakka people and the Atayal tribe. Finally, in the central courtyard, they can share a pot of citrus tea, symbolizing the hospitality and peaceful era that follows reconciliation.

The Relieved Bathhouse tells the story of submersion and rebirth, located on the path leading to the newly developed village, halfway to the General's Temple from the past. Like a node that connects the old and the new, participants can return to this place and accompany the submerged General's Temple, which was already immersed in water. Through the changing water level, it commemorates the prosperity of a bygone era that has been submerged and vanished. Ultimately, after the water recedes from November to February, all participants can face the newly developed village and find solace through a bathing ritual that mimics the collision with water.

By transforming the chronological sequence of water initiation into a narrative pilgrimage space, people can connect all the stories and cultures that have occurred behind the scenes of the newly developed village, feel the land emotions that have taken place here, and understand the relationship between the residents and Liuyutan Reservoir. While the past was halted by water, now it will rise again because of water. Water will revive the stagnant village, commemorate the homeland, and continue to preserve this story.
