Hedgerows have been an essential part of the historic landscape of British farmland for many years; they would mark past boundaries, have a substantial environmental impact on the landscape, and create linear biodiversity corridors.

In The Mappowder Hedgerow Laboratory in Mappowder, UK, new hedgerow typologies are invented. These hedgerows play key roles in restoring protective boundaries against floods, regenerating original woodlands and grasslands, and preserving the cultural legacy of the hedgerow craft.

The design proposes a protective boundary against floods, connects forest land, creates an ecological corridor for wildlife through hedgerow planting, and linear habitats surrounding local farmlands. Wildlife corridors are restored and enhanced by reweaving hedges, creating new farming practices while also encouraging ecologically valuable and vibrant landscapes. The project aims to foster rewilded farmlands, semi-natural woodland and grassland, and original grassland, woodland and hedgerow communities.
