Denmark's second largest city is in the process of rediscovering its old port. Asked to master-plan an entire island on a decommissioned pier, we found that city life had already arrived ahead of us. A beach bar made with a few containers and a pile of sand was proof that life doesn't need the buildings- it is the other way around. We decided to reverse the process and design the public space of the master plan before the surrounding buildings, so the buildings are shaped by the life that preceded them. A new public promenade connects the city to the sea. Rather than politely following the quayside, we propose a pulsating trajectory defining a series of new public spaces on land and water: a harbor bath, a floating beach, a theater, and a series of bathhouses built as pavilions in the public realm. Life between the buildings, ahead of the buildings themselves. We designed three structures, along the waterfront. Two peaks of homes with terraces marking the entrance to the port. A ziggurat hotel extending the promenade from the water into the sky. And a campanile-a residential form of Big Ben---designed as a freestanding slender clock tower, allowing its residents to live inside the clockface. We often find ourselves unable to create the quirky charm that we love in old neighborhoods. By allowing life to come first, we have created an urban island in Aarhus infected by some of the imperfections that are the natural side effects of real life.
