The subject of the project is to design Public Aquarium and Marine Research Center.
The Kyrenia research Aquarium not only serves as an iconic landmark displaying the wonders of aquatic life among other functions, but it fosters the innate connection of humans and their natural habitat. The design is focused on connecting the coherent diverse functions of the project and the natural, biological world allowing people to have a biophilic experience as they visit the research aquarium. The site spreads along the wide expanse of the seafront with an abundance of the beautiful natural vegetation of greens and trees located on the site. The structure holds four major functions (aquarium, museum, research laboratory, and education) they all have different times and days they function. This guides the structure’s design into four different sections with the primary function, the aquarium, placed in the middle. This segmentation allows the different functions to work separately and at the same time in concordance with each other without interruptions. The structure is placed around the natural vegetation with the aquarium section placed above it for intimate interaction between the design and nature. The building shell has effective fenestrations to foster natural lighting, ventilation, and view of the natural landscape and sea. The aquarium spans vertically between the floors of the middle section giving the people adventurous exploration as they journey between the floor spaces discovering the beauty of the contained marine habitat. The main entrance of the aquarium is accessed through a ramp leading up to the elevated aquarium, allowing people to seamlessly access other sections from the building. The other sections of the building have openings to access the natural vegetation below connecting them to the landscape and explorative paths for people to explore the natural site. This design gives a holistic, biophilic experience to people as they explore the architectural space fused with nature (the marine life, green vegetation, and the sea).
