Reinterpretation of vernacular architecture in Puebla
Nowadays, more than ever, bringing art closer to everyone is a social responsibility rather than an option. MUZAT is a Cultural Center in Zacapoaxtla, located in the northern area of the State of Puebla, a Cultural Center that goes from artisanal to artistic, a project that aims to add social participation through local art exhibitions, workshops, conferences, performance and sale of regional products, both artistic and gastronomic. The architecture of this Cultural Center in Zacapoaxtla blends in with the surroundings of the Sierra Norte de Puebla, it will impact on solidarity operations to rescue craft traditions and will be the space for a great collection of paintings that today do not have a place to be exhibited, appreciated and contemplated. MUZAT is the social cooperation between artisans, artists, managers and the general public that values the process of creating crafts as a latent tradition in us, as well as collaboration with artists for their decontextualization and conceptualization as pieces of art, it is a unification of both the artists and the public to create an "experience", managing to understand from its creators, the processes of creation and socio-cultural awareness. MUZAT generates actions to promote, value and encourage the ancestral processes and techniques of Zacapoaxtla community, raising awareness among the artists about the perception of their artisan products as pieces with identity. MUZAT decentralizes art, taking it from the urban environment to this rural context. The main problem is that there are around 1,600 stored paintings, that are not being taken advantage and do not have a proper place to be exhibited. Even dialogue with the Mayor of Zacapoaxtla was initiated where it was agreed to build a complex of this type. Plus, it is also contemplated to integrate a bus terminal and a linear park that runs through the city. PROJECT BENEFITS With a project of this scope the following benefits will be created: • A non-centralized culture that extends to this rural environment, expanding it from the urban territory. • Promotion of local artists and artisans, including their gastronomy and culture. • Support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which are focused on Sustainable Cities and Communities, such as protecting and safeguarding cultural and natural heritage, increasing awareness of the importance of Zacapoaxtla’s natural heritage considering it is situated in the forest with the greatest diversity of flora and fauna in the country. • Increased job opportunities for the local population through tourism. Elements of the vernacular architecture of the region were recovered and reinterpreted such as apex ceilings and materials such as rammed earth walls and quarry. The design and orientation of the buildings are based upon the precipitous topography of the land and its distribution is intended to preserve most of the existing vegetation.
