An increase in melting sea ice implies increased access to the Arctic. New shipping routes and territorial disputes will come at the expense of the Arctic region as an independent and living territory. 'Hyper-Borea' inserts itself at the intersection of these conflicting interests by implementing an autonomous system that allows the Arctic to govern itself with the aim of retaining autonomy by balancing capital gain and ecological stability.
By decoding existing Arctic abiotic and biotic resources, Hyper-Borea attempts to understand the ecological workings and impacts of increased human activity in Arctic waters. The system simulates the complex and changing environment of the real world in a game-like way, engaging players from around the world through the game to assist Hyper-Borea in making real-world decisions like managing ocean pathways as well as its resources.
