The Maison de l'Économie Créative et de la Culture en Aquitaine, MÉCA, creates a literal framework for the celebration of contemporary art, film, and performances. Centrally located between the River Garonne and Saint-Jean train station, MÉCA brings together three regional arts agencies: FRAC for contemporary art; ALCA for cinema, literature, and audiovisuals; and OARA for performing arts. The building is conceived as a single loop of public institutions. The riverfront promenade lifts off from the ground, covering a shared lobby below. The theater and mediateques form the two pillars that carry the skylit attic for the visual arts. The three institutions frame a central space, an urban living room for the life of the city as well as outdoor events for visual, narrative, or performance arts. As the promenade becomes façade, the concrete pavers become façade tiles. By pulling them apart, the gaps expand into windows, bringing daylight and views to the spaces within. Inside, the modest budget allowed us to pursue a Corbusian austerity in materials, with practically every surface finished in concrete, including a spiraling story pit sunken in the floor of the foyer. On the bleachers leading to the urban room, artist Benoît Maire created a bronze statue of a giant Hermes head. Located on the edge of the urban room, half the head has been sliced away as if the same gesture that created the hole in the building also cut away half of Hermes. For the art piece as well as for the architecture, the most exciting part, is the part that is absent.
